A new form of packaging for the export of table grapes has been developed to overcome the disadvantages experienced with current packaging technologies . Novel polymeric materials that control the release of sulphur dioxide ( SO 2 ) have been incorporated into liner bags that distribute low levels of the fungicide evenly throughout the packaging . This reduces the bleaching damage that sulphur dioxide causes and minimises sulphite residues in the grapes . Materials produced by Finewrap were extensively tested through field trials and the results will be discussed . This work is part of a Horticulture Australia funded project, with the Food and Packaging CRC
