Exports of Australian citrus to Japan must be free from fruit flies. When the use of ethylene di-bromide was banned in the late 1980’s, the best available alternative was cold treatment. Research was conducted on the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata and on the Queensland fruit fly Bactrocera tryoni in WA, Queensland and NSW to gain market access to Japan. Successful treatments were developed for oranges, lemons, tangelos, tangerines, tangors and mandarins, using the rigorous guidelines established by MAFF, Japan. This work has opened a valuable market for Australian citrus, and the process on how this was achieved will be discussed in this paper.
