Water vapour movement through perforated packaging materials was studied in order to enhance understanding into the rate at which water diffuses through the perforations. A computer-based experimental system was developed for measurements of water vapour transmission rate (WVTR), enabling on-line monitoring and continuous recording of the experimental variables. The focus of this work was on assessing the permeability of the packaging materials with different degrees of perforation and various perforation diameters. Further experiments were conducted to look at water vapour movement through a single perforation with varying diameters, and the effects of thickness of perforated packaging materials on WVTR. Based on these measurements, a series of mathematical sub-models are developed for simulation of water vapour movement through perforated packaging materials. Results of this investigation and the implications for design of packaging systems are discussed.
