Exposure the spores to volatile citral completely inhibited the growth of Penicillium digitatum, P.italicum and Geotrichum candidum in the presence of 6 – 15 µL citral in the plate (headspace concentration of 16 – 40 mL L-1). Incorporation into the plate medium had a similar effect, but exposing spores in dip solutions was much less effective. This suggests that volatile citral has potential as an antifungal treatment of citrus fruit. Citral and its isomers, geranial and neral, had the best efficacy compared to their related compounds, citronellal, citronellol and citronellic acid.
