Samples of cereal foods comprising 10 samples each of barley, maize and rye, and 20 samples of wheat were purchased from local retail stores and health food shops in Munich. These products (whole grains, grits and wholemeal) were analysed by EIA for DON and Zea. Maize samples were additionally analysed for fumonisins. Overall contamination levels were highest in maize, followd by wheat, barley and rye. DON was detected in most samples of barley (32 - 440mg/kg), maize (130 – 910 mg/kg), rye (31 –86 mg/kg) and wheat (36 – 370mg/kg). ZEA was detected at lower levels: barley (5.1 – 6.4 mg/kg, maiae (18 – 92 mg/kg). Eight of ten maize samples contained fumonisins (3.6 – 2600 mg/kg).
