The dietary staple foods in Botswana, sorghum and maize, as well as peanuts, peanut butter, phane (an edible larval stage of an emperor moth imbrasia belina Westwood) and pulses (cowpeas and beans) which are also widely used as food and for the manufacture of feeds, were analysed for the presence of aflatoxins, fumonisin B1 (FB1) and zearalenone (ZEA). Aflatoxins were detected in 40% of the samples analysed in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 64 mg/kg. Peanut butter samples were the most contaminated (71%). No aflatoxins were detected in maize. FB1 was detected in 36% of the samples. Maize samples were the most contaminated (85%) with the concentration ranging from 20 to 1,270mg/kg. FB1 was not detected in peanuts, phane and beans. ZEA was found in 2.6% of the samples at 40mg/kg.
