GC/MS with negative ion chemical ionisation permits the detection of underivatised patulin in apple juice extracts while minimising co-extractive responses. The technique was used with a variety of capillary columns in quardrupole, ion trap and magnetic sector GC/ MS instruments to confirm presumptive findings of patulin in apple juice at concentrations ranging from 68 to 3700 mg/ L.
