Aflatoxin contamination of chilli and paprika spices, dried friuit and sauces in retail stores in Adelaide, Australia, was surveyed. In 90 samples the average aflatoxin level was 19 mg/kg, range 0 – 89 mg/kg: only 9% passed Australian requirements of levels below 5 mg/kg. Spice powders had the highest average levels of 24 – 25 mg/kg, and others sample types around 9 –14 mg/kg. Most products were imported from overseas.
