Mycoflora and afatoxin/fumonisin production by fungal isolates from freshly harvested corn hybrids.

The mycoflora of three hybrids of freshly harvested corn grains collected from three regions of Sao Paulo, Brazil,was investigated. The fungal population was comprised mainly Fusarium, Penicillium and Aspergillus species and among the genera Fusarium and Aspergillus, the most frequently isolated spicies were F.moniliforme and A. flavus, respectively. All 40 isolates of F.moniliforme produced fumonisin B1 (FB1) at 20-2168 mg/kg and/or FB2 at 10-380 mg/kg. Among the 10 A.flavus isolates, 6 strains produced aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) at 615-30.750 µg/kg.
