Study of toxigenic moulds and mycotoxins in poultry feeds.

Seventy samples of poultry feeds including ‘starting’, mixed feed, corn, barley, wheat barn, fish – meal and soja, sunflower and colza cakes, were analysed for fungal contaminaton. Penicilium and Aspergillus were the dominant genera and were 35.7 amd 20.4% of isolates, respectively. Three out of ten A. flavus isolates, were able to produce AFB1 on rice. One of four A. ochraceus isolates and 2/14 P. verrucosum isolates produced OA on wheat. The toxigenesis of these strains was lower on the substrates from which they had been isolated from than on reference substrate. When cultured on a yeast extract and sucrose medium, 40 isolates including Penicillium, Aspergillus, Fusarium and Alternaria species produced toxic metabolites in biological tests.
