The natural occurrence of fumonisins in Brazilian corn kernels.

Natural contamination by fumonisins in Brazilian corn samples, 39 from the State of Parana, and 9 from the tropical states, Mate Grosso do Sul and Colas, harvested in 1990-1991 was investigated.  In the State of Parana, fumonisins B1 (FB1) and B2 were present in 97.4% and 94.8% of samples, respectively, with average levels of 4.2 and 3.5 mg/kg, respectively.  Samples from the tropical states had average FB1 and B2 levels of 10.6 and 10.3 mg/kg, respectively.  Samples from Colas had FB1 and B2 contamination of 5.8 and 3.6 mg/kg, respectively.
