Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) and related technologies such as Modified Interactive Packaging (MIP) have been used widely and successfully with fresh produce for a number of years, but have not been used on any extensive scale with cut flowers. The lack of commercial use with cut flowers is probably due to the short time that they are stored dry and also the conflict in beneficial conditions/atmospheres for the stems, leaves and flowers. Trials have been carried out on a number of flower types and cultivars and results have shown great differences between cultivars with some giving the required vase life after 25 days of dry storage at temperatures close to 0°C. In all cases there was sensitivity to temperature control with any lapses resulting in failure to maintain quality of the flowers during vase life trials.
