The progress of the breadfruit export industry in Fiji since October 2001 is reviewed in this paper. The large Samoan community living in New Zealand, Australia and the United States offers the main markets for fresh breadfruit. It is estimated that 500 t of fresh breadfruit could be exported annually to New Zealand alone. Breadfruit has been successfully exported to New Zealand utilising high temperature forced air (HTFA) quarantine treatment. A package of practices dealing with variety selection, production, fruit fly management, harvest and postharvest handling, quarantine treatment and packaging for export was developed to help realize the full potential of this market.
