The temperature management of tropical and subtropical fruits in Japan
Mandarin orange, apple and Japanese pears are major domestic fruits in Japan. Banana is the major import fruit. The specific tropical and subtropical fruits are bananas and pineapples. The other tropical and subtropical fruits have been handled as only exotic fruits. The average storage temperatures of the refrigerated showcase for fruits are 5° or 10° at the retail stores in Okinawa. The average temperatures of cold storage at stores are 10°. These temperatures produced chilling injury symptoms to tropical and subtropical fruits in showcases or cold storages. To prevent chilling injury of the tropical and subtropical fruits in Japan, the importer should provide the information about the ripening and suitable storage temperature.
