Present situation of pomelo production and research in China
China is the country of the largest acreage of pomelo production, and its output ranks the second to USA. Recently because of the influence of diseases and disaster weather, the scale of pomelo production decreased year after year. The world yield in 2005 dropped nearly 1/5 compared to that the 2004, but the production area and output of our country increased steadily, and the growth rate speed up gradually. In the past, the production in Chinamainly supplies the domestic market, only a little, no more than 1% of the total yield of the country?, is exported to other countries. However, after year 2000 the export quantity of pomelo increased quickly which indicated the pomelo products of our country was accepted by the international market and its potential is great. As for the domestic research about pomelo, it mostly focus on following areas, such as pomelo origination, analysis of germplasm resources, introduction and breeding of new varieties, biological characters, and the law of fruit development. The research emphasis is gradually changing from the aspect of cultivation and physiology to the aspect of molecular biology, and the methods using for research is advancing incessantly.
