Leaf vase life difference according to hosta species and cultivars
In order to develop hosta genus plants for leaves flower arrangement purposes; 46 native and introduced species of hosta in field were sampled for this experiment from August 2 through September 2, 2005.As for the environment condition, air temperature was 27-30°Cand humidity was 40-60%Cutting leaf hosta’s loss of ornamental value was surveyed when leaves changed yellow, withered or began to brown spots.A species with the longest vase life of cut leaf was Hosta tardiana ‘June’.Its color and shape did not change even thirty days after the treatment.H. tardiana ‘Hadspen Blue’ and H. tardiana ‘Blue Dimple’ from the same strain also maintained a long vase life of thirty days.H.sieboldiana ‘Frances Williams’, H. ‘Regal Splender’, H. plantaginea ‘Aphrodite’, H. capitata, and H. ‘Parky’s Gold’ began turn yellow about fifteen days later. While H.‘Striptease’, H. ‘Janet’, H. ventricosa ‘Aureomarginata’, H.japonica var.lancifolia, H. fortunei ‘Aureomarginata’, H. ‘Bressingham Blue’, H. ‘Antioch’, and H. minor had the shortest vase life of three days. This study may be used as basic data for selecting for leaf arrangement by surveying the vase life of cutting leaves for hosta species and changes in leaf colors over time. Also, it indicated the potential of developing hosta as a material for flower arrangement material purposes.
