Production and Marketing of Rambutan in Guatemala, Central America
Rambután was introduced to Central America from the Java Island, Indonesia in 1926-7. Scattered trees from unknown origin were planted in Guatemala since 1986. However, in 1993 seven cultivars (R-162, R-156, R-134, R-167, Jitlee, Benjai y Silengkeng) that represent the basis of the rambutan industry in Guatemala.
At present, 605 hectares are being cultivared in seven regions ((Izabal, Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Escuintla, San Marcos, Suchitepequez, Petén). Rambutan is harvested in two seasons, from May to September in the Coastal Plains of the Pacific Ocean and from October to December in the Atlantic Coastal. The average yield in the country is 10 metric tones per hectare.
The cultivated area is growing every year taking into consideration that the fruit is marketed in United States in Asian communities.
