Com is one of the most important cereal crops being cultivated in Iran. Worldwide reports showed that com grains are heavily contaminated with Fusarium spp. during harvest and post-harvest stages. Some of these species are known as deadly mycotoxin producers harmful to both humans and animals. The objective of this study was to identify Fusarium species associated with com grains harvested in Kermanshah, Hamedan, and Kurdistart Provinces, western region of Iran. In this survey, a total of 190 isolates of Fusarium were obtained from com grains collected from the region and identified by using morphological characters as F verticillioides, F proliferatum, F anthophilum, F. semitectum, F equiseti, F subglutinans, and F. pseudoanthophilum. This is the first comprehensive report on identity and distribution of Fusarium spp. from harvested com grains in western Iran. Molecular identification and mycotoxin-producing ability of the Fusarium spp. are being investigated.
