In order to assess ethylene levels during pot plant transport, two trucks
were monitored during 70 delivery trips. Samples for analysis were collected frequently
within the load area. In one truck, 0.05 l 1-1
ethylene was reached occasionally, while in the other this level was exceeded
on 12 occasions for more than 24 hours. The build-up of ethylene during pot
plant transport appears to be dependent on (1) adequate ventilation; (2) the
rate of ethylene production by the load; (3) ethylene production from the
material of which the walls were made; and (4) residual ethylene adsorbed onto
the truck lining from previous loads and high-ethylene producing crops. Damage
received by pot plants during transport did not cause complaints from
wholesalers.
