Effect of postharvest application of P-7 grain preservation on storage fungi of corn during ambient air drying and storage.

Corn grain (19.8% moisture, wet basis) was treated with P-7 Grain Preservative (15% propionic acid, 85% inert ingredients, Nayfa Industries, Dallas, Tex.), at rates of 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3%, on a wet basis, immediately after harvest as it was augered into modified grain bins. The grain was low temperature dried using ambient air. Samples were taken every two weeks for 42 weeks and the incidence of fungi was determined by plating on malt salt agar. Samples for the determination of percent damaged kernels (DKT) were taken at weeks two, four, six, and then every six weeks until week 42. Treatment with P-7 was associated with a reduction in incidence of Penicillium spp. and Aspergillus spp. for the first half of the experiment but not for the second half. In the second half of the experiment, treatment with P-7 was associated with an increase in incidence of Penicillium spp. Based on percent damaged kernels, there was no economic benefit to P-7 application in this experiment.
