A simulation model that calculates the allowable depth of 'Jonathan' apples stored in bulk is presented. The model uses the cumulative probability distributions for the elastic modulus and the normal strain at failure and gives the percent of apples with bruises as a function of storage depth. The calculations indicate that a single column of 'Jonathan' apples can be 8 m high immediately after harvest but only 3 m high after 45 days in refrigerated storage. Both heights assume that a 10% bruise level is acceptable.
