The primary purpose of this study was to determine differences between two groups of rural farm women and two groups of extension personnel regarding the participation of rural farm women in general farm tasks and postharvest operations, and their need for training on these tasks; the causes and extent of food losses, preferences for media, groups and times suitable for training, as well as opinions about effective policies and practices on postharvest technology.
The subjects for the study were 200 rural farm women, 18 years old or older, and served by extension; and 68 extension personnel who were subdivided into agricultural, home extension and rural youth agents from the Ministry of Agriculture. The rural farm women were randomly selected from a list of farm wives from 20 villages in the province of Iloilo and 20 villages in the province of Nueva Ecija in the Philippines. The extension personnel were randomly selected from a list of personnel of the same provinces from which the farm wives came.
An interview questionnaire was used to collect data from rural farm women by trained enumerators. A survey questionnaire was administered by the researcher to 68 extension personnel. These instruments were divided into four sections: (1) demographic data, (2) participation of farm women in general farm tasks, postharvest activities, training needs, and causes of extent of food losses, (3) preferences for media, groups and time most suitable for training and/or programs, and (4) opinions on effective policies concerning postharvest technology.
Statistical procedures used were the t-test, analysis of variance, least square means of variance, measure of central tendency, ranking and frequency distribution.
The findings revealed: (1) an increased involvement of rural women in general farm tasks, postharvest activities and a high need for training on these tasks, and (2) differences on the perceptions of three groups of extension personnel to rural farm women on their participation in general farm tasks, postharvest operations and effective policies and practices.
