EFECTO DEL CALCIO, CERA Y EMPAQUE CON LAMINAS DE PLASTICO ENCOGIBLE EN EL LARGO DE VIDA UTIL POSCOSECHA DE LA CHIRONJA (SPANISH TEXT).

This study was done to determine the effect of calcium, wax, and packing with shrinkable film wrap in postharvest "chironja's" shelf life.  Samples were cultivated in Adjuntas and Corozal.  The "chironjas" were separated into five groups, each group received one of the following treatments: (1) submersion in a 2% calcium chloride solution, (2) individually wrapped with shrinkable plastic film, (3) wax, (4) combination of treatments (1) and (2), and (5) control.  "Chironjas" thus treated were stored at 45circ Fpm5circ F and 90% pm 5% HR for 2 months and evaluated every 15 days.  The ripening indexes, circBx, and pH were kept stable during storage.  Titrable acidity, texture, and sugar content showed no tendency to increase or decrease during storage.  The most effective treatment to prevent weight loss and damage caused by cold was the use of heat shrinkable plastic.  The panelists found no significant difference between treatments in the internal appearance of "chironjas".
