Market opportunities for alternative mango cultivars from the Eastern Caribbean.

Several mango cultivars from the Eastern Caribbean show potential for increased exports to Europe and North America. These cultivars, 'Julie', 'Graham' and 'Grenada', show different quality characteristics to the better known Florida cultivars, but are preferred by the local populations. Improvements in pre-harvest cultural practices, postharvest handling and packaging have resulted in improved quality. Commercial trials indicate an increase in the acceptance by consumers in Europe. The islands of Grenada and St. Vincent possess 'fruit-fly free' status for entry into the US market, and therefore do not require postharvest treatments for fruit-fly control. Further research, quality improvement, market diversification, and promotion, should increase the demand for these cultivars over the next few years.
