Reasons for postharvest losses of fruits are discussed. Chemical, nutritional (principally the use of Ca salts) and physical (heat therapy, modified atmosphere storage) treatments for improving the postharvest life of fruits are considered. Residue problems on fruits and the safe disposal of the chemicals used are also examined.
