Yeast strains (strs US-7, 82 and 101) having biological control activity against various postharvest fungal pathogens of fruits and vegetables, including Penicillium rots of apples and citrus and Botrytis rot of apples have previously been described as Debaryomyces hansenii (anamorph, Candida famata) or Candida sp. strs. Additional physiological, DNA reassociation and mannan characterisation tests were performed that clearly established a new taxonomic classification for these strains, C. guilliermondii. Amendment of the physiological test profile in the taxonomic description of C. guilliermondii is also proposed.
