Measures to check sugar cane post harvest biodeterioration.

Tests on a new bactericide for use in sugarcane milling, BD Mill Sanitizer (BDMS), are reported. Juice extracted from sugarcane in a laboratory crusher was treated with 10 p.p.m. BDMS or with 100 p.p.m. of one of 4 other bactericides (HgCl2, NH4HF2, NaOCl, NaN3), stored at room temperature and analysed after 24, 48 and 72 h. Counts of Leuconostoc sp. after 24 h were decreased by 99.99% by treatment of juice with BDMS, compared with 21-37% decreases by treatment with the other bactericides. Inhibition of acid invertase activity after 24 h was about 93% with BDMS, and only 16-30% with the other bactericides. Purity decrease in 72 h was 5.9 units in juice treated with BDMS, compared with 12.6, 11.0, 14.5 and 13.9 units in juice treated with the other bactericides and 15.2 units in an untreated control. Similarly, sucrose content decreased less and dextran content increased less in juice treated with BDMS than in that treated with the other bactericides. In another test, cut ends of clean sugarcane, cv. Co.J.64, were dipped, immediately after harvesting, in a 0.1% solution of BDMS. After 120 h, the sucrose content of the juice had decreased by 0.74% and the dextran content was 1140 p.p.m.; corresponding values in an untreated control were 1.84% and 4460 p.p.m. In a factory trial, 10 p.p.m. BDMS was added to imbibition water for 24 h; the average purity decrease between primary juice and mixed juice was 1.89, compared with 2.26 in the previous 2 days. The use of this bactericide to treat harvested sugarcane or during juice extraction is recommended.
