Bunches of green banana cv. Robusta were harvested from a commercial orchard at Bangalore in 1987. Hands were separated from the bunches and the cut ends smeared with fungicide before air-drying. Bananas were dipped in CaCl2 solutions (0-6%) and then stored at room temperature. Four fruits from each treatment were weighed at regular intervals. CaCl2 treatment advanced ripening by 2-5 days. After 14 days of storage, bananas treated with 6% CaCl2 showed the lowest firmness, and highest titrable acidity, reducing sugar and total sugar contents. All treatments reduced the shelf-life of bananas; the shelf life ranged from 8.8 days (6% CaCl2) to 11.5 days (0.5%) compared with 14.4 days for the control.
