2-Aminobutane fumigation and resulting residues as an alternative for witloof chicory root protection.

The possibility was studied of fumigating chicory roots after harvest and before forcing as an alternative to fungicide treatment against postharvest decay. Tests with 3 fumigants (methyl bromide, 2-aminobutane [butylamine] and formaldehyde) showed methyl bromide treatment to increase root rots, and formaldehyde treatment to be ineffective at low dose rates and phytotoxic at higher ones. However, butylamine treatment gave good protection against fungal and bacterial infections at non-phytotoxic dose rates. Good results were only obtained when root surfaces were dry at the time of treatment. Crops grown from treated roots contained butylamine residues of 84 mg/kg, a level calculated to be lower than the toxic threshold. This paper was presented at the 42nd International Symposium on Crop Protection held at Gent, Belgium, 8 May 1990.
