Exotic tropical fruits are defined as those having a commercial future north of the Tropic of Capricorn in Australia, and which are not already recognized as developed industries (as are mangoes, bananas and pineapples). The origins, development history, crop selection and location criteria, crop potential, postharvest considerations, processing, and research needs of exotic fruits are discussed. Data are tabulated on the area under cultivation (in N. Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia), potential rating and production months in N. Australia for 26 species, and the temperature limitations for 42 species.
