Storage life of bananas produced in the French West Indies varies throughout the year, being longest in May-July and shortest in Nov.-Jan. It depends on the physiological stage of development of the fruit at harvest which is affected by the climatic conditions. To harvest fruits with the same storage life all year round requires adjustment of the interval between flowering and harvesting. Improvements in handling, storage and transport are necessary for better quality of dessert bananas. Postharvest losses of plantains many reach 40% at certain times of the year. To reduce these losses and to improve the fruit quality of this crop, which is mainly sold in local markets, major improvements in handling, storage and marketing are necessary. Although low temperature storage is the most effective method of storing the fruit, few facilities for this exist. A more practical method is to wrap the fruit in polyethylene film (two types, D 950 and XDR, have been found to be satisfactory), which reduces fruit weight loss by evapotranspiration and slows down fruit respiration, by modifying the atmosphere in the packs, this allows fruit to be stored for several weeks.
