Details are given of disease diagnosis and pathogen taxonomy in pasture crops (root rots in subterranean clover pastures, cucumber mosaic cucumovirus in subterranean clover, blind seed diseases in perennial ryegrass); field and vegetable crops (seed pathology of grain legumes, Pythium spp. associated with poor seedling establishment in rice, seed scheme for bacterial blight control in cotton, black root rot (Thielaviopsis basicola) a new record on cotton, root and stem rot (Phytophthora megasperma f.sp. sojae) of soyabean, ecology of potato taker rot pathogen (Erwinia chrysanthemi)); and fruit crops (field studies of Alternaria diseases of passion fruit, DNA fingerprinting of Pseudomonas solanacearum on bananas, indexing of budwood source trees in NSW Citrus Improvement Scheme, viroids in Australian citrus, characterization of citrus tristeza closterovirus strains, controlling CTV by pre-immunization with mild strains, comparison of Agrobacterium vitis strains from grapevine, performance of 3 apple clones infected with latent viruses and a mycoplasma, viruses in canning peach trees, trunk canker and root rot of peach and other stone fruits in NSW caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi). Disease management includes host resistance and tolerance in wheat, cotton, chickpea, passion fruit, avocado and citrus. Pesticide efficacy and strategic disease management includes control measures for Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici on wheat, Cylindrocladium colhounii on Annona atemoya, Alternaria spp. on passion fruit, banana leaf diseases, Venturia inaequalis on apple, postharvest diseases in stored apples, prune rust, and Monilinia fructicola on stone fruit. Work on biotechnological utilization of microorganisms for agriculture is outlined.
