A major effect of the trend in Zimbabwe towards maize planting in communal areas has been to reduce household food security. Although farmers receive high yields in good years, because of the turn towards monocropping, in bad years yields are very poor or nonexistent. Thus, the risk involved is increased. This paper briefly outlines the work which has been undertaken with small grains in Zimbabwe. Although small grains are low-yielding, they do yield even in bad years, thus improving food security.
