A review and discussion of the reasons for poor performance of tea plantations in this province and on ways to improve it. Imeretiya has 6500 ha under tea and the low productivity is attributed to numerous factors; mainly old plantations (1932-1940) requiring rejuvenation, and poor inter-row management resulting in soil compaction and root and plant death. The remedial measures suggested are rejuvenation of the old plantations, differential pruning, well-managed irrigation, fertilization and mulching with peat, soil drainage, replacing low-yielding and low-quality Chinese and Japanese cultivars with the local cultivars Kolkhida No.8 and especially with Imeretiya-1, and improvement of postharvest handling and processing.
