The mechanized harvesting and handling machines for walnut fruits that have been developed at the Fruit Growing Institute in Plovdiv are described. Using self-propelled shaking machines, 97% of the fruits are removed, and 96% collected by mechanized frames; 50-60 trees can be picked in an hour. The production line for removing hulls and shells and washing and grading nuts is described; drying the nuts remains a problem. Using an 8-person team, the equipment has increased productivity 12.5-fold.
