Current constraints on potato productions are briefly noted (need for low night temperature, limited seed availability, high production costs and postharvest problems of storage). The potential use of biotechnology is covered for in vitro germplasm conservation (including use of growth retardants, growth regulation by reduced incubations temperature and cryopreservation of germplasm), pathogen elimination, in vitro micropropagation and in vitro tuberization. Applications of molecular methods to potato improvement are mentioned such as genetic engineering for pest and disease resistance, and accelerating breeding via RFLP mapping. The roles of the International Potato Center, the Andean Development Bank, national and international agricultural research centres are considered in relation to technology transfer and training.
