The measurement of losses associated with cane deterioration.

Industrial-scale tests were done in 1988 and 1989, in which harvested sugarcane was left in the field, and changes in weight, pol % cane, weight of pol [sucrose determined by polarimetry] in cane, and ethanol content (p.p.m. on Brix) were monitored for up to 20 days. Pol % cane and weight of pol in cane showed fairly high negative correlations with amount of ethanol formed. For every 1000 p.p.m. ethanol formed, 2-3% of the original weight of pol in cane was lost. Since the average ethanol content found in cane at Illovo factory in the past two seasons was about 4000 p.p.m. on Brix, it appears that about 10% of the pol in cane was lost owing to cane deterioration.
