Fruit development, calcium level and bitter pit in apple.

Ten-year-old trees of cv. Cooper 7 SB/2 on MM.106 rootstocks were supplied with N and K at 3 rates, viz. (1) 70 + 70 kg/ha, (2) 70 + 210 kg/ha, and (3) 210 + 210 kg/ha. The soil was a sandy loam [details are given of nutrient status]. The different treatments affected fruit growth only slightly, in terms of diameter and FW, but the pattern of fruit Ca accumulation during fruit development varied between treatments. The differences in Ca translocation affected the increase in protein content during development and also the postharvest incidence of bitter pit. The correlation between Ca and protein contents in the fruits and bitter pit incidence is discussed in terms of the possible role of Ca in cell division and expansion.
