Fruits from Golden Delicious apple trees which had received 3 applications of calcium chelates (6%) during the 2 months preceding harvest, 5 applications of 50% CaCl2 (750 g/litre) during the 3 months preceding harvest, or 8 applications of calcium chelates and CaCl2 during the 4 months preceding harvest, were harvested in Sep. and stored in cold stores until Mar. A second batch of fruits also harvested in Sep. was dipped in 14% CaCl2 prior to storage in 4.0-4.5% O2 and 2.0-2.5% CO2 at 0.5 deg until Feb. Preharvest Ca application (particularly calcium chelate application) improved the physical properties of fruits, as measured by impact, penetration and shear tests and bruise susceptibility, but postharvest Ca application had no effect.
