The government and agribusiness community of Jordan are discovering that their country's location, topography, climate and soils are immensely valuable resources that can be exploited to increase exports of high-value fruits and vegetables. Jordan is located close to highly lucrative markets in the Middle East, and shippers export more than 500 000 t of fresh produce each year by truck to their Middle East neighbours. Successful penetration of the European market, along with the anticipated increase in sales to the Persian Gulf States, could have a powerful stimulating effect on Jordan's agricultural sector. For this to happen, improvements must be made in the production, postharvest handling, transport and marketing chain. The Agricultural Marketing Organization (AMO) was set up in 1987 to provide assistance to the private sector in the improvement of horticultural marketing practices. Jordan can produce a wide range of fruits and vegetables throughout the year due to its location and warm climate. The country's major foreign customers for fruits and vegetables have been Persian Gulf States. Major export products have been tomatoes (42%); cucumbers (10%); capsicum (6%); aubergines (5%), and watermelon, squash and lettuce. Exports to Europe account for less than 1% of total fruit and vegetable exports. Improved production, delivery and supply systems are needed to provide high-quality horticultural exports for the European markets.
