Perlette is the commercial table grape cultivar of North India but due to high temperature and low humidity at the time of harvest postharvest losses of 25-30% occur. Firm ripe berries, harvested on 18 June, were enclosed in polyethylene liners with 0.56-1.68% perforations at 35 deg C (field temperature). Some of the packs were placed in 2 kg vented corrugated fibreboard (CFB) cartons in cold storage for 1, 2.5, 6 or 10.5 h to lower the temperature of the berries to 30, 25, 15 and 5 deg , respectively. A Dual Release SO2 generator was placed in each polyethylene liner. The sealed polyethylene liners and CFB cartons were stored at 0-3 deg and 85-90% RH for up to 60 days. After 20, 40 and 60 days the berries were assessed for flavour, storage losses and quality. Packing at field temperature (35 deg ) and storing in polyethylene liners with 1.12% perforations with Dual Release for up to 40 days resulted in the highest organoleptic score and was the most economical treatment.
