Absorption of heptachlor in potato, sweet potato and onion from pre-harvest side-dressing and its dissipation by post-harvest processings.

Side-dressings of 5% heptachlor dust were applied at 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 kg a.i./ha 35 days before harvest of potato, sweet potato and onion in Rajasthan, India, and levels of absorption and dissipation by postharvest processing were studied. Absorption was greatest in potato, followed by sweet potato and onion. After harvest, washing removed 22-29% of residues from all the crops; washing followed by peeling and cooking reduced residues by 85-93 and 94-100% in sweet potato and potato, resp. Dehydration reduces residues by 74-100, 80-100 and 84-100% in sweet potato, potato and onion, resp. Following cooking, 0.03 p.p.m. of heptachlor was detected in sweet potato and potato that had been treated at 10.0 kg a.i./ha, while no residues were present in onion.
