Soil contamination inconsistently affects performance of diphenylamine as a superficial scald inhibitor.

The repeated use of postharvest/storage dips or drenches and treatment of whole trucks, carriers or bins of apples can lead to problems of contamination of the dips/drenches with soil from bins or tyres. Three types of soil were mixed with water containing diphenylamine (DPA) at 2000 mg/litre + benomyl at 300 mg/litre at rates of 1-5% (w/w). Cv. Rome apples were dipped in the mixtures over 8 d. The efficiency of DPA as a scald inhibitor was not consistently affected by soil type, the degree of contamination or the age of the mixture.
