Few apricots meet storage requirements.

The storage life of fruits of 27 imported apricot cultivars and 15 selections (Clutha series) from the DSIR breeding programme was evaluated at Clyde in 1990. Four trays, each containing 25 fruits, of each cultivar or selection were picked at export maturity. The first tray was evaluated immediately after harvest and the other trays were stored at 0 deg C for 2, 4 or 6 weeks. Fruits were held for 6 days at room temperature after cold storage; all were evaluated for firmness, % soluble solids, skin colour, flesh breakdown, mealiness, juiciness, flavour, off-flavours and postharvest rots. By averaging the % sound fruits over the 3 cold storage periods, the cultivars and selections were ranked for their storage life within 4 maturity periods or seasons, as follows: early (before 9 Jan. 1990), early to mid-season (10-19 Jan. 1990), mid-season to late (20-31 Jan. 1990) and late (after 1 Feb. 1990). The best-storing apricots in the early period were the new USA selections 13G780 and 48G472; their storage life was shorter, however, than that of later-maturing cultivars. In the early to mid-season period, San Castrese (from Italy) showed exceptional storage life with 97% sound fruits; other good cultivars were Goldrich (USA) with 87% and Monaco Bello (Italy) with 80% sound fruits. In the mid- to late period, there were no outstanding cultivars but Palumella (Italy) with 63% and HW408 (Canada) with 60% sound fruits stored reasonably well. In the late period, Tardif de Bordaneil (France) stored exceptionally well with 97% sound fruits; there was no significant loss in fruit quality in this cultivar after 6 weeks at 0 deg plus 6 days at room temperature. Three of the Clutha series, viz. Cluthagold (87% sound), 14/32 (87%) and 12/80 (80%) also performed well. The late cultivar Valleygold (Canada) had poor storage life with an average of only 23% sound fruits.
