Cucumbers. Soft necks are a matter of immature growth and drying out.

Soft neck is a disorder which often occurs on the first stem-fruits of summer- and autumn-grown glasshouse cucumbers. It is characterized by the necks becoming dried and limp. The cultivar Mustang is highly susceptible, and lightweight fruits are worse affected than heavy ones. In a storage trial with Mustang, lowering the RH from 95 to 65% increased moisture loss 3-fold and the percentage of affected fruits was doubled. Practical measures for limiting postharvest fruit moisture loss are outlined. In a trial with plants grown in autumn culture with a normal or high fruit load, harvested either early or when mature, the incidence of the disorder was highest (66%) on plants with a normal fruit load, harvested when the fruits were immature. Data are also presented on the % fruit moisture loss, average fruit colour after storage and yields/m2. The highest yields/m2 were obtained from plants with a normal fruit load, cropped when the fruits were mature; this treatment reduced the incidence of the dis order to 42%.
