Resistances to airflow through grains and oilseeds, expressed as pressure drop per unit depth of seed column for a known airflow rate, are essential for the design of drying and aeration systems, and for mathematical prediction of pressure and airflow patterns in stored bulks. Several empirical and semi-theoretical equations have been developed to describe the airflow-pressure drop relationships of agricultural products. These equations and various factors affecting the airflow resistance of grains are reviewed. Use of these equations in design and mathematical modelling of drying and aeration systems is also discussed.
