Conditioning and preservation of forages.

The harvesting of forage for quality hay depends on cutting on the optimum date with regard to plant physiological stage and maturity. This requirement often does not coincide with optimum drying weather in many southern states of the USA because of high humidity and frequent rain showers. Adverse drying conditions often cause a 30 to 50% loss in dry matter, and this loss depends on the field curing conditions and duration. Therefore, it is not possible to harvest forages such as ryegrass [Lolium perenne] at peak maturity and make good quality hay without some type of conditioning treatment to increase the drying rate. Another option is to bale the forage at high moisture and use preservatives to maintain the hay quality during storage. Various mechanical and chemical conditioning treatments of forage and chemical preservation of high-moisture hay are discussed.
