This study examines the roles of women in the food cycle and considers the dietary quality of families' diet. The primary method used in the study was face-to-face interview with a stratified random sample of 300 (highland N = 180; and lowland N = 120) rural farm women in two areas in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data analysis procedures included Chi- square, Kendall's Tau, and One-way Analysis of Variance. There were significant differences between highland and lowland with regard to land tenure status, the extent of crops used as cash crops, and the participation of women in all types of crop production activities. There were no significant differences between highland and lowland with regard to the participation of women in certain types of postharvest activities, or in the dietary quality of the diets of women and their families. There was a small, negative correlation between the dietary quality of the families' diet and the number of types of activities women performed in the food cycle. There was a small, positive correlation between the dietary quality of the families' diet and the educational level of women. Family size was not systematically associated with the dietary quality of the families' diet.
