Crown rot, pedicel rot, anthracnose, brown spherical lesions and blossom-end rot were the most common postharvest diseases of banana cv. Naine in Mauritius during 1989-90, with percentage occurrences of 100, 98.3, 100, 100 and 87.3, respectively. Black soft rot was observed less frequently. All diseases except brown spherical lesions, which are thought to be a physiological disorder, were caused by fungal pathogens. Colletotrichum musae was found most frequently, followed by Fusarium spp., F. pallidoroseum, Botryodiplodia theobromae and C. gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata]. Mucor spp., Phomopsis sp. and Rhizopus sp. were found less frequently. The onset of the diseases was variable; however, they were consistently related to the length of the storage time and were not related to the stage of ripening. Treatment with Ethrel (ethephon) resulted in disease avoidance because fruits ripened earlier.
