Postharvest grain losses in developing countries.

The world food supply can be increased by identifying and controlling food losses. The chapter identifies the different categories of food, notably grain losses, and examines the role of sanitarians and health inspectors in solving problems in the light of postharvest technology implementation. Consideration is given to the definition and types of postharvest losses; estimated postharvest grain losses; causes of food losses; and the role of sanitarians. It is suggested that sanitarians, public health inspectors, food inspectors and environmentalists, if present, can all play a rewarding role in reducing grain losses in developing countries. Trained individuals should be employed to monitor and evaluate operations to safeguard food safety and quality. Aside from frequent inspection by these individuals, educational efforts such as conducting sanitation and hygiene education workshops and seminars would contribute greatly in helping people to consume safe food with minimal losses. Preventing posth arvest food loss is vital in the battle against world hunger.
